Martha Karua declares 2027 presidential bid, urges Kenyans to elect woman leader
Karua said previous male-led administrations have failed to unite the country.
People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has officially announced her intention to run for president in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Speaking in Isiolo, the Senior Counsel likened national leadership to running a household, stating, "A mother ensures everyone is fed, whether there is plenty or little."

She urged Kenyans to consider electing a female president, arguing that previous male-led administrations have failed to unite the country.
Karua, who was Raila Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 general election under the Azimio la Umoja coalition, continues to play a prominent role in Kenya’s opposition politics, alongside other key leaders such as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.
“If it's God's will, the seat I seek is the presidency, so that as a woman, I can take care of Kenya the same way a mother cares for her household. A mother never lets even one child go to bed hungry; even when food is scarce, she shares it so that everyone gets something," Karua stated.
“You have tried men all these years, please, this time, try a woman from PLP," she added.
Presidential ambitions
As the 2027 election approaches, women are boldly stepping forward with presidential ambitions.
Among them is Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba, who recently outlined her long-term vision for the country.
While she has not officially declared her candidacy, she recently unveiled her vision for transforming Kenya’s economy, particularly through the promotion of cottage industries.
Wamuchomba laid out her agenda centred on empowering local communities through cottage industries.
Her proposals included subsidised utilities for cottage production zones, creating a national innovation award system, and repurposing idle stadiums into evening markets.
She also pledged to end the export of raw agricultural products such as macadamia, coffee, and tea, instead advocating for local value addition and processing.
"One day, I will lead this country and transform our available labour into wealth. When I become president, women will wear wigs made locally from banana fiber, and all sanitary towels will be produced from biodegradable materials right here in Kenya,” she said, adding, “I have no money to campaign, but who will make me president?” she stated in a brief statement on X.
